What Discipline of War/Magic job should I roll?
It doesn't matter. Go with your gut. It will end up being useful in any content you participate.

First of all, we call these Hand jobs 'round these parts.

What's the difference between a Linkshell, Free Company, Grand Company?
A Linkshell (LS) is a chat room. You can have up to 8 linkshells on your character. You can activate/deactivate these with Ctrl+L (brings up a menu). There is a Kraken Club LS.

A Free Company (FC) is (to use standard MMO terms) a guild. This gives you access to FC chat as well as other perks FC get (e.g. bonus exp, shared item bank, etc.).

A Grand Company is an NPC faction (Maelstrom for Limsa Lominsa, Twin Adders for Gridania, and Immortal Flames for Uldah). You can build rep with them for gear. You can switch freely between the 3 and your "progress" will always stay the same. However, if you want to do GC content with friends, you should pick the same one so you can share and do guildleves.
